# Appointment type summary

## Why this matters

The Appointment Type Summary shows demand and non-attendance for each type of appointment, such as
a clinic or procedure, in a single table. It shows which services carry the most activity and where
DNAs (Did Not Attend) cluster. That is the evidence you need to target reminders or change a
clinic's format.

## Before you start

Appointments are counted under their [appointment type](/docs/appointments/appointment-types/).
Appointments made without a type can't be broken down this way.

## Options

| Option | Choices |
|---|---|
| Formats | View, PDF |
| Dates | **From:** and **To:** |
| Filters | **Users**, **Types**, **Rooms**, **Departments**, **Confirmed**, **Attendance** |
{.table}

This report has no CSV version. See [Running Reports](/docs/reporting/running-reports/) for the
steps.

## What it contains

One table, **Appointment Summary**, with a row for each appointment type and a total row at the
bottom.

| Column | Meaning |
|--------|---------|
| Appointment Type | The type's name |
| Appointments | Appointments of this type in the period |
| Patients | Different clients who had an appointment of this type |
| New Appt | Appointments that were the client's first |
| Repeat Appt | All other appointments |
| Duration | Appointment time in minutes |
| Units / 5m | Appointment time in 5-minute units |
| DNA | Did Not Attend count |
| UTA | Unable To Attend count |
{.table}

## What to watch for

**Patients is lower than Appointments**
**Patients** counts each client once, however many appointments of that type they had. The
difference between the two columns shows how many clients came back more than once.

**Adding up Patients doesn't give the number of clients seen**
A client who had two different appointment types is counted once under each type.

**DNA and UTA are counted per client**
DNA and UTA come from each client's own attendance and confirmation status. A group appointment
adds one DNA for each client in it who didn't attend.
